Symposium Overview

We invite you to join us for this continuing nursing education symposium that will address the latest innovations in cancer care. The symposium will present up-to-date information on a variety of cancer care topics, including new and novel therapies and disease updates, end of life care, legal developments, genetic screening considerations, and targeted supportive care. This activity has been approved for 7 hours of CNE and ACPE credit.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:
  • Discuss and analyze the implications and ethical dilemmas that affect patients, providers, and the patient’s family
  • Envisage the future of genetic screening laws and ethical dilemmas with rapid breakthroughs in the science of genetics
  • Explain the role of multidisciplinary interaction in the management of hepatobiliary malignancies
  • Explain how identification of problems early in the postoperative course of patients that undergo complex surgery translates into better outcomes
  • Discuss the role of the Palliative Care Team in the management of a patient facing death
  • Explain nursing care interventions at the end of life and the effect (emotional, physical, and spiritual) that death and dying has on staff nurses
  • List three reasons why cardio-oncology clinics are needed
  • Identify two commonly used chemotherapy agents that are high risk for cardiovascular adverse events and calculate a patient’s cardiotoxicity risk score
  • Describe factors in selecting treatment for a relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma patient
  • Understand the role of stem cell transplant at the time of multiple myeloma relapse
  • List the risk factors and signs/symptoms of sepsis, and learn how to advise cancer patients of when to seek medical attention
  • Describe the severe sepsis goal-directed treatment bundles
  • Describe CAR-T therapy and the cytokine release syndrome toxicity that is associated with the therapy
  • List the optimal care for patients receiving CAR-T therapy, including monitoring and prompt management of toxicities with aggressive supportive care associated with cytokine release syndrome
  • Recognize new statutes, regulations, and lawsuits that have occurred over the past two years
  • Understand the basis for pathway driven treatment of cancer and precision medicine
  • Discuss harnessing of the patient’s own immune repertoire in the treatment of cancer
